Writing with empathy

This week’s hint for writers is from RLF Consultant Fellow Anne Wilson, talking about how to gain a sense of empathy with your readers. As a children’s non-fiction author, I always consider how a child is going to approach my book. I imagine he or she will probably look at the pictures first, so the captions need to be informative. If possible, I find a young reader to check my text before I press the key to send it to the editor so they can pick up any words and phrases that might be hard to understand or are simply too old-fashioned!
